Letter from the Editor |

Dear Colleagues,
As I reflect on the Olympic torch relay, I am struck by its profound symbolism for our field of radiology. The torch, lit from the sacred flame at Olympia and carried across continents, represents a continuum of excellence and shared values. This ancient ritual is a powerful metaphor for our duty to nurture budding radiologists and radiation oncologists, guiding them to become stewards of patient advocacy, leadership, and quality medical imaging. |
Our field is evolving rapidly, driven by technological advancements and an increasing emphasis on turnaround times, personalized medicine and patient-centered care. Through these changes, we must continue to advocate for patients, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met. It is within this dynamic landscape that the doctor’s role becomes critical.
Young and early career physicians are not just inheriting a field of practice; they are stepping into roles that require knowledge, passion, technical expertise and a commitment to advocacy and leadership. To be successful, they require a deep understanding of the broader healthcare system and the impact of diagnostic imaging and therapeutics on patient outcomes. New leaders must be adaptable, proactive and innovative while upholding and advancing the quality standards set by those who came before them.
The role of established physicians in this relay is vital. Just as each runner in the torch relay carries the hopes of their predecessors and the responsibility to pass the flame forward, so must seasoned radiologists and radiation oncologists pass the sense of duty to those at earlier career stages. It is our duty as a society to ignite this passion in one another and to foster the development of physician leaders, patient advocates, and champions of quality so that they in turn can pass the torch of onto future generations.
Let us embrace this responsibility with the same reverence and optimism seen in the Olympic torch relay to ensure that the flame of radiology continues to thrive, ensuring a bright future for our profession.
Warm regards,
|

FRS President's Message |
 |
Hello Everyone,
Welcome to a new academic year and therefore a new executive committee for your Florida Radiological Society. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Juan Batlle for those who don’t know me. I am a physician working for Radiology Associates of South Florida in Miami-Dade (serving Baptist Health South Florida health system), and I am proud to serve as the president of the society until next summer. I am also serving as Chair of the CT accreditation program for the ACR, as well as on the council steering committee.
|
We just finished a terrific annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, at the Ritz-Carlton, Grande Lakes, with over 250 attendees, over 150 of which were residents and fellows. We hope to continue to grow the pipeline of Florida radiologists who are involved in both the Florida Radiological Society and the American College of Radiology. We had several national speakers including the chair of the ACR Board, Dr. Alan Matsumoto, as well as a diverse group of vendors and employers filling the exhibit hall. next year‘s annual meeting returns to South Florida near my hometown, as it will be at the Westin Fort Lauderdale, directly on the beach. I hope to make it a banner year for attendance and vendor engagement. You will definitely hear more about that in the coming months, including the annual meeting agenda and details on how to register.
In terms of a practical agenda for my term as presidency. First and foremost I would like to serve you, our members, however you best see fit for yourselves, your practices, your patients, and Radiology in general. I am always open to that feedback, and please do not hesitate to reach out by email or cell. I hope to achieve legislative success at the state level in Tallahassee. I want to increase membership in the society and continue to improve our year over year attendance and engagement at the annual meeting next summer. As always, I would like to do all of that with a sense of belonging, inclusion, and true friendship, which is what drew me to this society in the first place. |

FRBMA President's Message |

FRS/FRBMA Annual Meeting 2024:
Lisa Adams, Past President FRBMA
In concluding my term as the president of the Florida Radiology Business Management Association (FRBMA), I cannot think of a better final act then to participate in the leadership for the annual meeting of the Florida Radiological Society (FRS) and the FRBMA in Orlando, Florida, in July. As noted during the meeting, |
Florida is proud to be one of the few states that combines the administrative and clinical leadership of radiology in a dynamic meeting to share, learn and grow in all aspects of our industry. The theme of the meeting was "Forging Ahead into the Brave New World of Radiology". We had the opportunity to hear from leaders and experts in the field of radiology and administration. The meeting was also a great opportunity to collaborate and communicate with our radiology colleagues as we strive to advance our profession and practice.
The sessions kicked off on Friday afternoon with the business management section of the meeting, where an informal round table discussion shared experiences and suggestions for negotiating payer contracts and hospital stipends. Formal presentation sessions commenced with Cathy Keller, MD, who stepped in to fill in as lead-off speaker when one of our slated speakers was unable to present. Dr Keller was followed by Ted Burnes and our national speakers, Frank Lexa, MD and Richard Duszak, MD whose arrival was delayed significantly by the CrowdStrike event and went directly from the airport to the podium without breaking a sweat.
Saturday’s rich content opened with Alison Dudley’s Legislative Update and was highlighted again by FRS/FRBMA favorites Frank Lexa, MD, Richard Duszak, MD and Paul Chang MD. In addition, Joshua Hirsch, MD, Alan Matsumoto, MD, Kurt Schoppe, MD, Amy Patel, MD and our own Barbara Rubel rounded out the esteemed panel of presenters.
One of the most special moments of this meeting was the honor of presenting the FRBMA Lifetime Achievement Award to Barbara Rubel, Senior Vice President of MSN, LLC and past president of FRBMA. Barbara has been a visionary and a pioneer in the field of radiology business management for over 25 years. She has been instrumental in the continued growth of the FRBMA/RBMA and a key contributor to FRS as Co-Chair of the FRS/FRBMA Education Committee. She has been a mentor and a friend to many of us, and a role model and an inspiration to all of us. She has made a lasting contribution to the radiology industry and the community, and she deserves this recognition and appreciation. I was honored to present her with this award and to thank her for her service and dedication.
Capping off the special highlights for me was attending the 2024 Charles D. Williams, MD, FACR Legacy Lecture Award and presentation by Thomas Yuschok, MD, FACR physician partner/owner of Radiology Imaging Associates in Daytona. Dr. Yuschok delivered a captivating and insightful lecture on "PET Imaging: Past, Present and Future". As he walked us through the inception, development and current expansion of PET/CT technology and efficacy, his enthusiasm for his specialty was evident and infectious. As CEO for RIA, I consider Dr Yuschok a mentor and inspiration for me on many levels so being able to see him honored in this way was a great way to end my tenure as FRBMA president.
As I close out my presidency in the FRBMA, I would like to thank the FRBMA board members for your support and collaboration. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with you and to serve you. I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident that we will continue to grow and prosper as an organization and as a profession. I look forward to our continued momentum under our new leader, Janene Markuske.

Legislative Update |
 |
Thanks to all who attended the annual summer FRS conference in Orlando. As you all are well aware campaign season is well underway.
During my presentation at the summer board meeting, I made my annual plea for financial contributions to the FRS PAC as it is a very important piece of my being able to help radiologists get their message across in the state Capitol.
|
In addition, I asked for radiologists who were willing to act as a resource for helping patients navigate the ever changing and complicated healthcare system to share their contact information with me. This is a very valuable commodity as you are “the doctor’s doctor “ and often folks need help on what they need to do next or access to medical facilities.
Please, if you are willing to participate, it would be greatly appreciated. Email your contact information to me at: Alisondudley@dudleyandassociates.com
Donate to the FRS PAC
Thanks to all who have already contributed to the PAC and shared your contact information.
I greatly appreciate your support. |

Attention FRBMA Members! Please support the cause. We encourage you to be PAC members and supporters; you do not have to belong to the FRS. Donations can be made online through our PAC website www.FLRADPAC.org. Thank you for your donation: Drs. Baran, Chen, Cook, Eber, Grainger, Hatton, Keller and Robinson.
It is critical that we support both our Florida PAC and RADPAC in order to bolster our voice in Tallahassee and Washington, respectively. Please join FRS lobbyist Alison Dudley in her special appeal for all Florida radiologists to become Florida PAC members. If you would like to help FRS defend radiology against untoward legislation and introduce bills that have a positive impact on our practices, we need your financial support to re-elect our friends in the state House and Senate. The FRS can also show you simplified ways on how to sign up your radiology group. Contact Lorraine Roger or contact Alison Dudley for more information. |
