Letter from the Editor |

Dear Colleagues,
As we begin the new academic year, we welcome a new executive committee for the Florida Radiological Society. My name is Santo Maimone, I am a breast imaging radiologist at Mayo Clinic Florida, and I will proudly serve as your FRS Secretary for this year. |
The FRS/FRBMA annual meeting recently occurred in Ft. Lauderdale and was a great success. The FRS program featured distinguished speakers from across the country, including ACR CEO Dana Smetherman, ASTRO President Sameer Keole, Chair of the ACR Board of Chancellors Alan Matsumoto, and renowned AI expert Eliot Siegel. Notable Florida speakers included Cathrine Keller, Evelyn Anthony, Jeffrey Stone, and Felipe Munera. Special congratulations to Anthony Mancuso who was awarded the prestigious FRS Gold Medal, honoring his exceptional career and contributions to the field of Radiology in Florida.
If you have never attended an FRS/FRBMA meeting, I strongly encourage you to join us in July. Our conference rotates annually to a variety of Ritz Carlton locations throughout the state, offering deeply discounted room rates in beautiful locations. But more than a getaway, it is a wonderful forum to meet, engage, and network with Florida colleagues and state-of-the-art exhibitors. Our conference provides a great opportunity to learn from state and national leaders, mentor younger members, and make lasting career connections. We encourage you to get involved in FRS committees and other activities. The FRS is more than just a robust state chapter, it can function as a support team and second family to help you sustain a fulfilling career in Florida.

FRS President's Message |
 |
Hello Everyone!
With the new academic year upon us, we have had some transitions in the executive committee for your Florida Radiological Society. First, I would like to introduce myself to those who may not know me. I am Drew Bowman, an abdominal and cardiac radiologist from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your President. Second, I would like to formally thank my predecessor in this role, Dr. Juan Batlle, for his support and steady leadership these past twelve months. Thank you, Juan!
|
I am pleased to share exciting news that came out of our recently completed Annual Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale: Two of our esteemed members, Dr. Kurt Mori and Dr. Emile Latour, both from Jacksonville, have graciously offered to match contributions to the FRS Foundation this year up to $50,000 each! In other words, if the rest of our members donate a total of $50,000 by Dec 15, 2025, they will donate a total of $100,000, meaning the FRS Foundation will receive $150,000! This would be a truly transformative gift to the Foundation to allow it to help foster future Florida radiologists for decades! Drs. Mori and Latour wish to use this gift to honor Drs. Paul Mori and Floyd Hurt, themselves pioneering Florida radiologists who inspired them. Thank you Drs. Mori and Latour!
For those of you less familiar, what does the FRS Foundation do? The Foundation supports our radiologists in training in attending FRS and ACR related events, embedding the culture and philosophy of Florda Radiology. Specific events supported include, but are not limited to, the FRS Annual Meeting each July, the ACR Annual Meeting in Washington, DC each spring, and the Florida legislative visit during session each year. Resident involvement in the FRS Annual Meeting alone continues to grow, with over 140 residents, fellows, and medical students in attendance at this past meeting, setting a national standard for our profession. The FRS Foundation plays a large part in making this possible and helps to fund many of those who present scientific posters at the annual meeting.
So please, help us reach our goal of $50,000 in donations by Dec 15 to maximize this unprecedented offer! If we work together, I have no doubt we will be successful. An official fundraising campaign will be kicking off very soon, so please be on the lookout for that. In the meantime, you may donate by clicking here: Educational Symposia FRS - FRS Foundation

FRBMA President's Message |
 |
In concert with the Florida Radiological Society, the Florida RBMA chapter held our Annual Meeting in July in Fort Lauderdale, bringing together radiology business leaders, physicians, and industry experts for a dynamic and collaborative program. Sessions featured timely topics including AI integration, revenue cycle optimization, and strategies for managing imaging demand. Highlights included an inspiring keynote on leadership in healthcare transformation, a lively panel discussion on payer trends and contract negotiations, and interactive workshops on operational efficiency and practice growth. The meeting fostered valuable dialogue between clinical and administrative stakeholders, reinforcing our shared commitment to advancing radiology in Florida. |
During our Gold Medal Reception on Saturday evening, there were several special presentations. The first presentation was a heartfelt tribute in memoriam to Dr. Larry Muroff, delivered by Jeff Younger, FRBMA, Dr. Michael Raskin, and Dr. Charlie Williams. Their remarks honored Dr. Muroff’s remarkable legacy as a mentor, leader, and visionary in radiology. The presentation reflected on his decades of service, his enduring influence on our profession, and the countless lives and careers he touched along the way.
Our Florida RBMA chapter also gave out two awards. Barbara Rubel, MBA, FRBMA, current board member and former FRBMA president, presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Troy Purcell, MSF. Barbara delivered a heartfelt and humorous tribute, celebrating Troy’s decades of leadership, dedication, and influence in the radiology business community. Her remarks highlighted not only his professional accomplishments, but also the lasting friendships and mentorships he’s built throughout his career. It was a touching and memorable moment that reflected the deep respect our community holds for Troy.
The Florida RBMA Above and Beyond Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional commitment, service, and dedication to the Florida Radiology Business Management Association. This award recognizes a member who consistently goes the extra mile, making significant contributions that exceed expectations and help advance the mission and success of the FRBMA. We do not present this award every year; instead, we only award it to truly deserving individuals.
It was my honor to present the Florida RBMA Above and Beyond Award to John Detelich, CPA, MBA, who recently retired after 21 years as the CEO of Radiology Associates of Tallahassee, in recognition of his exceptional dedication and tireless contributions for more than 20 years to our organization.
The Florida RBMA is excited to announce our 2026 Winter Retreat, taking place Thursday, February 12th through Friday, February 13th, in Orlando, Florida. This two-day event will feature engaging educational sessions, networking opportunities, and discussions tailored to radiology business professionals. Attendees will enjoy a relaxed, retreat-style setting that fosters collaboration, idea-sharing, and solutions for the challenges facing our industry. Mark your calendar now—you won’t want to miss this opportunity to connect, learn, and recharge with colleagues from across the state.

Legislative Update |
 |
After a very long extended session, the legislature finally finished the budget taking their final vote on Monday, June 16th. The presiding officers did not sign the budget and present it to the Governor until the 27th of June.
|
The Governor acted on the budget on June 30th, just in time to start the new fiscal year on July 1st. He used his line-item veto power to reject $1.3 billion of the proposed spending, including over $750 million that the Legislature had been setting aside for reserves in next year’s budget and over $560 million in various local projects and programs sought by legislators.
It was an ugly ending to a very acrimonious session.
Everyone was exhausted as the session went 105 days as opposed to the constitutionally mandated 60 days. The past month has had folks scrambling to make up for lost time on the fundraising front.
The Governor has appointed former Senator Blaise Ingoglia as CFO replacing now Congressman Jimmy Patronis. Senator Joe Gruters was President Trump’s anointed candidate for the position, but a deal was struck, and Senator Gruters will be the Republican Committee National Chairman and will retain his Senate seat. He was recently announced as Chair of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee.
CFO Ingoglia, a staunch DeSantis supporter, is endorsing Byron Donalds for Governor.
Former house member, Dr Ralph Massulo, R, (dermatologist) will run for Ingoglia’s seat, and is anticipated to win handily.
There still has been no announcement on who will be Lieutenant Governor.
Committee weeks will start in October and the Breast Imaging Workgroup has been working hard on mammography legislation.
It has been a busy summer!

Attention FRBMA Members! Please support the cause. We encourage you to be PAC members and supporters; you do not have to belong to the FRS. Donations can be made online through our PAC website www.FLRADPAC.org. Thank you for your donation.
It is critical that we support both our Florida PAC and RADPAC in order to bolster our voice in Tallahassee and Washington, respectively. Please join FRS lobbyist Alison Dudley in her special appeal for all Florida radiologists to become Florida PAC members. If you would like to help FRS defend radiology against untoward legislation and introduce bills that have a positive impact on our practices, we need your financial support to re-elect our friends in the state House and Senate. The FRS can also show you simplified ways on how to sign up your radiology group.
