Dear Colleagues,
Cybersecurity is a critical issue for radiologists, and one that can be easily overlooked as we get busier by the day. Imaging practices rely heavily on interconnected digital systems to store, share, and interpret patient data, handling vast amounts of sensitive health information. This makes us prime targets for cyberattacks such as phishing, ransomware, and data breaches. |
Exciting technological advancements are transforming how we deliver care, but they also offer an opportunity for exploitation by cybercriminals. Remote work is one example, providing comfort and efficiency for radiologists, but a vulnerability for cybersecurity. AI tools and cloud-based storage systems also may be targeted. Phishing scams have become far more sophisticated, while we have become busier and more distracted. It is estimated that a cyberattack occurs once every 11 seconds, and the expected cost of cybercrime worldwide may be upwards of $10 trillion.
Cybersecurity is not just a technical issue or buzzword; it is a professional responsibility to ensure patient safety and practice efficiency. Those who have been impacted can attest to the devastating effects that can ensue from a solitary breach. If you are looking to bolster the cybersecurity of your practice, check out some of the resources offered by the ACR at their Cybersecurity Resource Hub.

The Florida Radiological Society is only as strong as its active members. If you have ideas, skills, or enthusiasm to contribute, we invite you to join one of our committees or volunteer your time. Together, we can make a positive impact on the radiological community in our state.
We value your feedback and encourage you to share your ideas, concerns, or suggestions. Our goal is to serve you better, and your input is invaluable in shaping the future of the FRS.
I want to express gratitude for your continued support and engagement in our vibrant society. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and to collaborating with you on projects that will improve healthcare in our state.
Once again, I also wish to remind everyone of our ongoing fundraising campaign for the FRS Foundation. If we reach our goal of $50,000 in donations by Dec 17, Drs. Kurt Mori and Emile Latour will each match these gifts. Thank you to everyone who has donated thus far. You may donate by clicking the link below or see the QR code further below in this eBrief. Thank you to Drs. Mori and Latour and to everyone who has donated thus far.

The Next Evolution of PACS: Boosting Radiologist Productivity
For three decades, Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) have served as the digital backbone of radiology departments. What began as a tool to store and retrieve images has evolved into a sophisticated ecosystem that can either empower or encumber a radiologist’s workflow. As imaging volumes continue to climb and the pressure for faster turnaround times intensifies, the next generation of PACS promises to do more than just manage images; it is poised to transform productivity itself. |
Today’s PACS landscape is remarkably diverse. Traditional on-premises systems remain common in large hospital networks where control and security are paramount, but they can be resource-intensive and slow to scale. Many of them are also not compatible with artificial intelligence add-on tools. Cloud-based PACS solutions have surged in adoption, offering elasticity, off-site redundancy, and easy access from any workstation or device. This has been a crucial advantage for groups managing multiple hospitals or remote readers. Enterprise imaging platforms take this even further by unifying radiology with other diagnostic areas such as cardiology and pathology, creating a holistic patient imaging record that streamlines interdisciplinary care.
A growing number of systems and physician groups now incorporate AI-driven features such as intelligent worklists, automated triage of critical findings, and structured reporting tools that minimize manual clicks. Radiologists can prioritize urgent cases faster, report more consistently, and track performance through embedded analytics dashboards. Meanwhile, workflow orchestration engines are reshaping how studies are assigned; they are balancing case mix, subspecialty, and even reader fatigue to enhance both efficiency and quality.
These innovations have the potential to dramatically reshape radiologist productivity, but they are not without challenges. Successful deployment depends on strong connectivity, robust cybersecurity, and genuine clinician engagement. A PACS system that is technologically advanced but poorly configured, or worse, not embraced by its users, can add friction instead of removing it. Vendor-neutral integration remains a key goal, ensuring that practices retain flexibility as new tools and AI modules emerge.
Looking ahead, PACS is moving toward a predictive, context-aware environment: one that learns from each radiologist’s preferences, adapts to workflow patterns, and integrates data from across the enterprise to support clinical decision-making. The revolution will not be about which vendor leads the market, but about which systems enable radiologists to do their best work faster, with fewer clicks, and with more meaningful clinical impact.
As Florida imaging leaders, we stand at the intersection of technology and patient care. Understanding the evolving PACS landscape and how to align it with our unique operational realities will be essential to maintaining both our efficiency and our edge in the years ahead.

Legislative Update |
 |
It is November and there is a chill in the air in Tallahassee. Legislative committee meetings are under way; The House and Senate will be holding two weeks of committee meetings in November and in December. Legislation is being filed in anticipation of the January 13th start of the legislative session.
|
The hot topic to date is property tax relief. The House has seven proposals to slash property taxes.
The Governor also wants property tax relief for the citizens of Florida. He has criticized the Speaker’s approach of having numerous tax relief proposals put on the ballot for voters to choose from but has yet to present his legislative proposal.
This will make for an interesting and potentially contentious session.
The revenue estimating commission is meeting today to put price tags on the known proposals.
The cities and counties are concerned about how these proposals could create shortfalls making it difficult to fund police, fire rescue, and school systems.
It is an election year with the Governor and Cabinet seats on the ballot, along with the entire House (120 members), and half of the Senate (20 members).
Fundraising is in full swing, so any contributions to the FRS PAC, are greatly appreciated:

Become A PAC Member Today |
 |
Attention FRBMA Members! Please support the cause. We encourage you to be PAC members and supporters; you do not have to belong to the FRS. Donations can be made online through our PAC website www.FLRADPAC.org. Thank you for your donation.
It is critical that we support both our Florida PAC and RADPAC in order to bolster our voice in Tallahassee and Washington, respectively. Please join FRS lobbyist Alison Dudley in her special appeal for all Florida radiologists to become Florida PAC members. If you would like to help FRS defend radiology against untoward legislation and introduce bills that have a positive impact on our practices, we need your financial support to re-elect our friends in the state House and Senate. The FRS can also show you simplified ways on how to sign up your radiology group. Contact Lorraine Roger at lroger@flrad.org or Alison Dudley at alisondudley@dudleyandassociates.com for more information. |
