About This CME Teaching Activity
This CME teaching activity is composed of a series of lectures that address the information that is provided by a variety of imaging methods when applied to the analysis of disease processes of human articulations. The diagnostic approach will include a review of the key anatomic features of each articulation and the basic morphology of the many disorders that affect joints and surrounding tissues. Throughout, whenever possible, close anatomic -pathologic-imaging correlation will be provided to explain the imaging features characteristic of these processes.

Target Audience
The target audience includes practicing radiologists and radiology residents and fellows, orthopaedic surgeons and their residents and fellows, rheumatologists and their trainees, sports medicine physicians, and any other physicians or trainees involved in the analysis or treatment of articular disorders, especially those involving synovium-lined joints.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this CME teaching activity, you should be able to:
  • Assess a variety of imaging methods (including conventional radiography, CT scanning, and MR imaging) as they are applied alone or in combination to the diagnostic assessment of a variety of disorders that involve human articulations, especially synovial joints, disorders that include arthritis, infection, and metabolic, ischemic, neoplastic, and traumatic processes as well as a number of important internal derangements of these joints caused by physical activity, particularly those related to sports activities.
  • Describe in detail the anatomic basis for many of the observed imaging findings as well as the likely pathogenesis of the disease process.
  • Formulate a reasonable differential diagnosis for common and uncommon processes of these articulations based on a better understanding of the anatomic and pathologic features that explain the imaging findings, allowing a single and correct diagnosis in many cases.
No special educational preparation is required for this CME activity.
